The Potch Trio, in residence at North-West University: Potchefstroom Campus in South Africa, was formed in the late nineteen-eighties, originally with pianist Albie van Schalkwyk, and later Francois du Toit. They have performed a wide range of repertoire from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century, and have given the South African premieres of works by amongst others Pärt, Schoenfield, Babadjanian,Vasks, Kupkovic, Sviridov, Chebodarian and Piazzolla. Their CD of trios by Babadjanian and Vasks have received wide critical acclaim. Being much in demand all over South Africa the trio regularly performs in the major centers, ranging from the Baxter Concert Hall in Cape Town to the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom and the annual chamber music festival in Bloemfontein. In 1999 they appeared at the seventh Palaces of St. Petersburg International Chamber Music Festival in Russia, as well as at the Academy of Arts in Moscow. In addition to chamber music repertoire for piano trio, the trio is known for its performances of the Beethoven triple concerto. All three members of The Potch Trio are well-known soloists in their own right, maintaining active performing careers as well as being educators. Among their many chamber music engagements, both individually and as a trio, they have performed and recorded for The South African Chamber Music Society.
